Training Courses
REFLEXOLOGY DIPLOMA COURSE STRUCTURE
The course is made up of attendance at 7 two-day courses (mainly at weekends) involving approximately 100 hours of contact teaching with home study and practice in between the courses. On completion of the full course an examination day may be attended at which a written and a practical test are taken and students successful in these tests are awarded a Practitioner Diploma from the Bayly School of Reflexology and may join The British Reflexology Association as an ordinary member.
At all of the courses, there are morning lecture sessions and afternoon practical sessions. For the practical sessions, students give supervised treatment to other students in the group and on some occasions to other people invited to attend to receive treatment from the students who are training.
COURSE CONTENTModules 1 and 2 teach the theory and principle of the method of reflexology and cover the relationship that exists between the reflex areas of the feet and the different parts of the body. There is a brief introduction to anatomy & physiology and how reflexology may be helpful in the treatment of common disorders. Information is given on how to carry out a treatment session, when to treat and when not to treat and possible reactions to treatment. At the practical sessions, the particular type of massage required (Bayly Method) to obtain the best results when giving Reflexology treatment is taught.
After these parts of the course students should have a basic understanding of reflexology and will have sufficient information to know how to give a reflexology treatment and therefore be able to practise on family and friends.
Modules 3 to 7 of the course look at the method in considerably more depth and are aimed at those students who wish to train to practise the method as a professional practitioner.
At the lectures at these modules of the course the different anatomical systems of the body are considered with a more detailed look at the anatomy and physiology of the system, specific disorders involving the system and how to apply reflexology in the treatment of disorders involving the system.
Also included is a lecture, usually from a podiatrist, on the detailed structure of the foot and disorders affecting the foot. The business aspects of setting up a reflexology practice are also considered.
For the practical sessions, the basic technique is expanded on during the course to include pressure variations, additional techniques and the reworking of areas. The use and application of Hand Reflexology is also covered.
CASE WORKThroughout the course students are required to submit case studies of their Reflexology work and this involves 86 hours of treatments to be completed between the Module 2 course and the Examination Day. Full details of the case studies are given to students at each module of the course. Students also have to complete a short Project between Module 7 and the Examination Day.
EXAMINATION DAYThis is usually held in conjunction with the second day of a Module 2 course (normally a Sunday). The 3-hour written paper covers reflexology, anatomy & physiology, different disorders which can affect the body and the application of reflexology to different disorders. The practical assessment involves giving a full reflexology treatment and normally takes place in conjunction with the practical session of a Module 2 course.
DURATION OF COURSEThe average length of the training course before obtaining a Diploma will be approximately one year. With a number of courses available throughout the year, students do not have to attend set dates but can choose the dates on offer which are most convenient for them. Students need not attend all the modules of the course at the same venues but the Modules must be attended in sequence.
There is a minimum interval required between modules of at least 6 weeks, except for between Modules 1 and 2 when there will be a shorter interval, and this allows students time for study and practice and in particular to complete the necessary case work. For those students with no prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology more home study will be required.
Between modules, students may contact the Bayly School for assistance required in connection with course work.
VENUESThe courses are normally held at weekends and mostly at venues in the centre of major cities including London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Leeds. The Worcester course at The Bayly School is held mid-week. In general, similar dates for the courses at the different venues are anticipated each year. (Details of venues can be found on the application form)
Courses are also held abroad on behalf of the Bayly School by representatives in Australia, Japan, Kenya and Switzerland (details of overseas contacts may be found below). The overseas courses may follow a slightly different format to those courses held in the UK.
