For more than five decades, Tony Porter has shaped the evolution of modern reflexology. As the founder of Advanced Reflexology Techniques (ART) and a pioneer of Focused Reflexology, he brings a unique, insightful approach that reaches far beyond traditional methods. His work emphasises precision, sensitivity, and a deep appreciation for the way the feet mirror the body’s inner landscape.
During this special 2-hour lecture, Tony will share the knowledge, experience, and philosophy that have inspired practitioners around the world. Participants will gain rare access to his refined techniques, his method of “reading” the reflexes, and his intuitive understanding of the body’s healing potential.
Tony says:
“It gives me great pleasure to have been asked by the BRA to give this presentation. My purpose is to support reflexologists at every stage of their journey—whether they are just beginning or already established practitioners.”
Tony’s connection to reflexology runs deep. He reflects on how the foundations of his path were unknowingly laid at the age of six, and how these early experiences grew into a lifelong vocation. Since beginning his professional practice in 1974, he has accumulated a wealth of valuable insights that he will share during this lecture.
He will also explore how reflexology has transformed over the decades—evolving from the time of Eunice Ingham to what he now sees as a diluted version of the original concept. Through his perspective, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of reflexology’s roots, its evolution, and how to reconnect with its true essence.

Overview
- "Treat what you find, not what you are looking for.”
This guiding principle sits at the heart of Tony Porter’s philosophy. Rather than approaching the feet with preconceived ideas or a fixed agenda, Tony teaches practitioners to listen to what the reflexes actually reveal. True reflexology is not about forcing a protocol—it is about responding with precision and sensitivity to the body’s real, present needs.
- The physiological effects of different types of reflex contact.
Not all pressure is equal. Tony will explain how variations in touch—depth, speed, angle, and technique—interact with the nervous system, circulation, and connective tissues. Understanding these subtleties allows practitioners to choose the most effective type of contact to stimulate the body’s natural healing responses.
- How to recognise when a reflex has been ‘worked’ sufficiently.
One of the most valuable skills in reflexology is knowing when to stop. Tony will show how changes in reflex texture, tone, responsiveness, and sensation indicate that the reflex has been effectively stimulated. Learning these cues helps avoid overworking while ensuring the therapeutic outcome is achieved.
- What a disturbed reflex really indicates.
Disturbances in the reflex—such as congestion, tightness, graininess, hollows, or sensitivity—offer important clues. Tony will explore how these variations reflect underlying imbalances or areas of stress within the body. Developing the ability to interpret these subtle signs elevates reflexology from routine technique to a truly diagnostic art.
